The Ambitions Rumor Mill- Part 1- by XOX1
"Most Existing Careers Will Not be Expanded in The Sims 3: Ambitions"- It seems, by the gist of this article,as the title says, most EXISTING Rabbitholes will not be opened. The one exception may be the hospital. "All You Need To Know About The Sims 3 Ambitions..." by Sokawok- http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/192161.page
Putting on my Journalist's Hat, I cannot give an accurate review of something that I have not experienced yet, so I can only field my best guesses from the scant information that has been "carrot-dangled" in front of us. From what I see so far, and have formed an opinion of, EA is slowly integrating bits and pieces of things from former Sims 1 and Sims 2 games into Sims 3, while trying to introduce new concepts, to avoid becoming just another clone of previous series. 1- It looks like we are going to get a working, non-rabbithole, Firehouse and Hospital. So that is at least one new and one old working community lot. The promotional information says that we are "Going to have more control over what our sims do at work". Since there are still going to be rabbitholes, my best guess is that they are going to integrate the old "Chance Card" popups that we used to have in Sims 2. Remember them? A popup would appear while your sim was at work, and give you two choices. One would glean a good result, the other would give a bad result. I know from extensive gameplay, that the results are not based on wise choices, but rather, random selection by the game. 2- It looks to me, from viewing the trailer, that the time machine is going to be yet another rabbithole. If so, it means that EA has not given up on rabbitholes. The time machine will most likely be a rabbithole that utilizes "Chance Card" popups as I have stated above. We do now have "Chance Card" popups in Sims 3, but they have no real consequences to them. I am not a game designer, but I do know a great deal about the process. It is far simpler to design, and furnish a building, than it is to write interactive coding for the gameplay within them. If we look real hard at the existing rabbitholes in our towns, we can sometimes see that they are furnished inside. The "Community School for the Gifted" is a good example of this. Writing code to create school enviroment interactions for the sims, in order to open up the rabbithole, is quite another story. Not to mention that it has to be tested via gameplay. I also know what it's like to have to meet a deadline, due to my proffesion as an event planner. When time runs out, one has to go with what one has at that point. I would guess that EA is going to slowly open up old rabbitholes, over time, while introducing new open community buildings. 3- It looks to me, that some of the new professions are not going to require actual lots to be dedicated to them. Tattooing, sculpting, and drawing architectural blueprints can be done from any location in town. They will most likely be along the lines of the workbenches from the Sims 2 Freetime EP. These will most likely be objects that have interactive coding included in them, but not actual jobs that a sim has to go to work to accomplish. We are supposed to be able to become ghostbusters, which implies haunted houses, but don't we have that already? This will most likely be a "ghost-catching ray gun" object, with interactions attached to it's use.
1- It looks to me, that we are going to be getting a real motorcyle! Vroom, Vroom! 2- It looks like we are going to get the ability of placing actual lots, in sizes of our choosing, wherever we want, like we used to in Sims 2. This will allow us to have much better control over lot sizes and placement in our towns. 3- It looks to me, that the "monster" this time around will be a servo robot. I do hope they are smarter than the ones in Sims 2. I had to shut mine down half the time, just to get some peace and quiet around the house. I would, as many others, have preferred vampires, but I will gladly take what I can get.
My Parting Shot: I would have much more prefered them to have made / wrote code for things like when a bar or DJ station is placed on a communtity lot, it came with a DJ or bartender. I would have prefered them providing us with a maitre de stand, cooks, and waiters; or even those nifty snack stations introduced in Sims 2's Bon Voyage. I would have prefered the comeback of the microphone stand. These would give us the ability to build our own nightclub and resturant community lots, so we could have some action after dark. Patience Grasshopper! Thanks for reading this!- XOX1
